SIMs do break over time, not fully but partially. Even if your SIM still works in your previous phone, your new phone might access a faulty area which resets the SIM now. Continuous resets makes the SIM non-detectable. Therefore: Did you ask your network operator for a replacement SIM already? If you ask not for a ‘new’ but a ‘replacement’ SIM, you should not loose your phone number or stored value.

Furthermore, please, ask an acquaintance of yours to double-check the SIM was inserted correctly. Over that last decade, I inserted a SIM in the wrong direction and did not see it myself. Go figure! Furthermore, some phones allow a wrong insertion easily, so it might not be even your fault but the fault of the engineer who designed the phone.

If all this did not help, you cannot do much more and discuss this with Amazon (your point of sale; retailer). Amazon then should repair that phone or give you a replacement phone. Or is this the second phone already? Or did Amazon decline any responsibility as well? In any case, please, state which operator you use.
